Gary Beavers, USW Vice -President opened up our conference and
spoke of the state of the industry. Safety was his key point and stated, "It is
time to stand up and fight for meaningful health and safety language".

Leo Gerard, USW President  on the political side stated, " The right wing
spends time making government dysfunctional and then runs against
dysfunctional government". To the delegates he reminded them that "the
knowledge you get here does not belong to you or me, it belongs to the
membership".

Dr. Keith Romig, USW Corporate Research gave a numbers wide
industry overview. I am trying to get the side presentation that he used, it
was very eye opening. I will present it to you if allowed to have a copy.

Mike Scarver, PAC Cordinator, gave a very compeling reason for
becoming part of the USW PAC program. I would ask that you consider
joining, I am.

After lunch we went to NOBP Region meetings and from there we went
into council meetings to put proposals together for NOBP. I will relay those
proposals once we have a NOBP put together if agreed by delegates to do
so.
September 19-23, 2011

Today, delegates for the oil sector of United Steel Workers approved the
National Oil Bargaining Policy for our next round of bargaining with the
strongest industry in the world. I believe the oil policy board and
Vice-President, Gary Beevers (picture of Gary and counsel on home page)
did an excellent job of interpreting the floor counsel's proposals and
applying them to paper. Only one change was made to the document by the
delegates present and was unanimously approved.

Next, the delegates and staff representative will take the policy back to the
local membership for their approval. Once approved by the membership, it
will be sent to the industry and talks will begin at the international level with
the lead company (which is Shell Oil) and our Vice President, Gary
Beevers, and the Policy committee.

I am not placing a copy of the policy on this website. The reason is this, so
our members view it for the first time instead of the media. We will be
having a ratification vote soon ( we are shooting for the week of October 10)
and at that time you will be furnished a copy for your review.

Stay tuned to this website for upcoming details and please get down to
your local and speak your mind with your vote!!
